Whether you have a new neighbour, shared your password too many times, or just want better security — changing your WiFi password is quick and easy. This guide works for any router brand.
Why Change Your WiFi Password?
- Too many unknown devices connected to your network
- Slow internet speeds despite a good plan
- You shared your password and want to reset access
- General security hygiene — change it every 6 months
Find Your Router IP Address
On Windows: Open Command Prompt, type ipconfig, and look for the Default Gateway — usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
On Mac: Go to System Settings → Network → your WiFi connection → Details. The router IP is listed there.
Log Into Your Router
- Open any browser and type your router IP address in the address bar
- Enter your router admin username and password (check the label on your router — default is often admin / admin)
- You are now in your router settings panel
Change the Password
- Look for Wireless, WiFi Settings, or WLAN in the menu
- Find the field labelled Password, Passphrase, or Network Key
- Delete the old password and type your new one
- Click Save or Apply
- Reconnect all your devices with the new password
Tips for a Strong WiFi Password
- Use at least 12 characters
- Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Avoid using your name, address, or phone number
- Use a passphrase like Coffee!Sunrise#42 — easy to remember, hard to guess
