Whether you have a new neighbour, shared your password too many times, or just want better security — changing your WiFi password is quick and easy. This guide works for any router brand.

Why Change Your WiFi Password?

  • Too many unknown devices connected to your network
  • Slow internet speeds despite a good plan
  • You shared your password and want to reset access
  • General security hygiene — change it every 6 months

Find Your Router IP Address

On Windows: Open Command Prompt, type ipconfig, and look for the Default Gateway — usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

On Mac: Go to System Settings → Network → your WiFi connection → Details. The router IP is listed there.

Log Into Your Router

  1. Open any browser and type your router IP address in the address bar
  2. Enter your router admin username and password (check the label on your router — default is often admin / admin)
  3. You are now in your router settings panel

Change the Password

  1. Look for Wireless, WiFi Settings, or WLAN in the menu
  2. Find the field labelled Password, Passphrase, or Network Key
  3. Delete the old password and type your new one
  4. Click Save or Apply
  5. Reconnect all your devices with the new password

Tips for a Strong WiFi Password

  • Use at least 12 characters
  • Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  • Avoid using your name, address, or phone number
  • Use a passphrase like Coffee!Sunrise#42 — easy to remember, hard to guess
